Dear Hui Mei,

Thank you very much in wanting to collaborate with us for our event on 30 Oct.

On 30 Oct 2010, we will be having a (HALLOWEEN- related) NIGHT FESTIVAL where the library will be re-decorated & patrons will come in costumes. Programmes & stories on mystery/horror and spoof-fantasy will be highlighted to children for the whole day & night (10am -9pm)

As spoken on the phone, it will be a carnival based event where there will be different interactive booths for children, families & teens to do fun stuff & there will be a line up of performances or talks or workshops allocated at various times throughout the day.

Since the event will be on halloween which is a very visual event, we would love for your group mates to help us in terms of dressing up as characters, in costumes, in order to create the atmosphere and make the library users feel like it really IS a halloween, dress up & fantasy celebration.

As spoken, we hope you can work with the school's drama club & borrow the costumes for that day. We can assist with professional make up for 2 of the volunteers who are acting as prominent characters. The remaining characters, we hope that you can prepare the make up & costumes on your own. I will try to request for help on my end and let you know if I managed to find any external help, but for now it looks difficult.
Do let me know what characters you can come as. Thanks!

Also, we spoke about staging a spooky story, storytelling session cum drama performance that is interactive & involves the children in the audience, if possible.
This can be in the form of asking the audience to repeat chants/lines in a song with u, or to come up n act as simple story characters for a while.

We also discussed about asking your teammates whether they have other talents or interests and can set up booths using those talents.

One other thing we thought about was a simple face painting booth or craft booth. Some volunteers can manage the booth while facilitating the interactive session at the booth.

Yes, we can definitely record all this under CIP hours.

Julia Gabriel Debating results

Weeeeeeeeeeeeell, this is a long overdue, and rather painful post to do.

Remember the Julia Gabriel's Singapore Secondary Schools Debating Competition Ravin, Bernie, Deepika, Hanis and I were participating in? Yeah, we made the announcement during morning assembly that TKGS had made it into the Quarter-finals, top of Division III. And that on 27 March we would be going against Orchid Park at Nan Chiau High.

And for the second year in a row, we lost at the Quarter-finals to the same school.

And yeah, I'm happy to announce a couple more things.

Ravin and I went to watch the Division II and III Grandfinals. We collected our Quarter-final trophies (funny thing is, what happened to our trophies from last year?) and certificates.

And at the Grandfinals, the motion is open to the floor, and our darling Ravin won "Best Floor speaker", beating more experienced debaters from Div II schools like ACS Barker. So, a big round of applause to Ravin. Her trophy was a lot prettier than the plastic ones we got for getting into the Quarter finals.

Oh, and I got the top 10th best individual speaker for Div III; a slight improvement from last year's top 11.

Yes, Natalie Wang, (ex) vice President of TKGS' Literary and Debating Society, reporting for duty. I apologize for my perpetual absences, both on the blog, and for CCA meetings.

So I post here to tell you all that when Bernie, Ravin and I were in the Computer Lab, we have finally initiated her into the LDS committee with the secret initiation rites, and only now is she your official President. What secret initiation rites? I'm sorry, but they are to remain top secret. Y'know? Secret. *shuuuuuush*

And if you really want to know what the secret initiation rites are?

TKGS Literary and Debating Society SEC 4 FAREWELL 2008
13th May

Great. I've finally got time to update this post. I'll write a nice detailed account okay? And Tiky's dancing video (the first one) is up on Youtube already and in my latest post (Tuesday, 20th May 08).

So on 13th May, us LDS-ers gathered in Malay Room 1 for the epic Sec 4 Farewell, which was super epic as there were only FOUR Sec 4s in LDS.

Audre and LSE were screaming at me from the second floor (I had Prefectorial Board stuff) as Tiky was the ONE AND ONLY Sec 4 present...at first.

So that was one half of the seniors who turned up. Only 2 turned up, maybe on account of IR.

That's TIKY, btw.

Nat and Deepika and the rest of the D.E.P. girls put up a play, Marzipanzel...
It was pretty screwed up, no one was really listening, the D.E.P girls forgot their lines and threw in some improvised words that consisted of nothing but "You Bitch!"

Thus, Tiky wasn't entertained and Deepika angrily confronts her.

Donuts were graciously sponsored by Nat's mom and eaten up really really fast. They were yummy, okay!?

Don't worry, you're still new to TKGS and haven't got used to the craziness of the seniors yet. But the standard has REALLY dropped compared to previous meetings.

I know the Sec ones haven't seen the previous meetings, but the Sec twos should know what I'm talking about.

Gavel Club!

Audré here! Alright, I have "unauthorised" access to the LDS blog! Hehe. (Nat and Bernie are so gonna kill me. x.x)

Well guys, I can't play with colours and fonts like they can, so people, SQUINT your eyes if you must.

Anyway, enough of the hoo-haas. I'm here to tell you guys there's a interschool gavel competition coming up. For those who went for the Gavel summit, you guys should know about this, yeah? It's in this MAY and yeah, to somewhat join the competition, we need a proper gavel club and join the Toastmasters International, so that we can be considered a "proper" club.

The competition is coming soon, but I've yet to confirm the details. I'll inform you guys once I know about it. Anyway, Mrs Tan told me to choose a few people in the Gavel committee. I've already sent me, Charmaine's and Saajidah's name down as Gavel President, Vice President of Publicity and Vice Education respectively. Gavel club and LDS committees are different... So yeah. But GAVEL STILL FALLS UNDER LDS, DON'T GET THIS WRONG. That means everyone who's in LDS has to fulfill the "D" part of "LDS", and everyone who's in LDS is joining gavel.

After sitting through the first meeting, I hope you guys have a feel of a how a gavel club session is conducted. Still, there's room for improvement... Gavel is not something you have to be good or eloquent in your speech. It's to help you be a better speaker. Just by taking the first step, with a table topic or an "ice breaker", would help build up your courage and gradually, you'll be able to communicate more effeciently and effectively. I guarantee you money back if it doesn't work. (Ok, Lame joke. But you get the picture.)

I know I sound like a "lao ah mah", but yeah... Give gavel a shot. ;)

Erm, we're also hoping to have bonding camps during the holidays... So look forward to that! :D

And... Oh! The sec 4s farewell party... WE NEED IDEAS! Haha. Contribute 'em on the taggy and stuff. We have no budget on the food, which means we have to fork it out. The presents and stuff the school can fork out for us. Hehe. So yeah, contribute some ideas, alright? We wanna give a nice party for our beloved sec 4s!

As you must have realised by now, we got into the quarterfinals, which were held at Nan Chiau Secondary on 4 April.

Why did it take me so long to update? Because I only just finished midyears today. (no wait, I still have my Drama paper next week.) And since I'm too lazy to update properly, I shall just take this off my blog. (BTW, it's www.midoriislonely.blogspot.com )

So, on the 28th or March 2008, three crusaders made their way to Kuo Chuan Presbyterian Secondary School for the Round III of the Julia Gabriel Secondary School's Debating Competition. They were accompanied by their 4 huge suporters, Hui Wen, LSE, Tiky and Charmaine.

Their opponents were Manjusri Secondary.

I'm proud to say....that...we...

Yes, we even did a little victory dance in the school canteen.

And guess what? M sec school deviated from the motion by talking about Pre-marital sex and pornography.

The toothbrush and the toilet seat
Marched to quite a different beat
Two bathroom dwellers; different but in love
Everybody disagreed
This was peculiar, strange indeed
But they knew this was a match sent from above.

Alas, fate had a different plan
The house’s little toddler, Jen
Wasn’t quite as adept and dexterous
The poor toothbrush fell in the bowl
And got flushed down the potty hole
The seat wept, for this was indeed … disastrous.

Out of heartbreak, he split in two
Because of his defect, they threw him away

Julia Gabriel Competition - 2nd round of Quarter Finals

On 7 March, the Debate team (Deepika, Natalie and Bernadette) went for the second round of the quarter finals of the Julia Gabriel Competition.

The debate team had won the first round as the other team (Beatty Secondary B team) did not turn up. Walkover win, sheesh. I mean, this was supposed to be our first try at a debate. The motion was "This House would ban violent video games", with TKGS as the Proposition. Noooo.... I so do not agree even after doing countless hours of research into this...

The motion for the second round was "This House believes that elite sportsmen should receive government funding", TKGS being the opposition, and Temasak Secondary as the proposition. TKGS lost.

I can say no more... Except I was extremely disapointed.

May I suggest that we bring a video camera for future debate competitions so that we can view ourselves speaking?

BTW, in case you haven't realised, the italics is Natalie speaking.
